GOD’S TOOLS
Establishing stones of remembrance is vital to our faith. It’s something we can intentionally do so we won’t forget past blessings and answers to prayer.
Then there are other ways God “brings back” His truth to our hearts and minds. This week we’ll look at how He does just that.
As usual, let’s check out these verses in two or more versions of the Bible.
Read John 14:26
1. What important role does the Holy Spirit have in our lives?
Read 2 Peter 1:12-15
2. What does Peter say about reminding? What responsibility do you think we have to other believers?
Read 2 Peter 3:1-2
3. What does the ministry of reminding do for others? What does Peter want his readers to recall?
Read Exodus 12:21-27
4. What lasting ordinance is described in this passage? Why were the people to observe it?
Read I Corinthians 11:24-26
5. What command for remembering does Jesus give in these verses? What do these symbols represent?
Has a fellow believer ever reminded you of a truth from the Bible that you knew but needed to hear? Or have you ever hesitated speaking a word to someone you consider more mature in their faith? How important is this ministry of reminding for us today? I hope you’ll share your thoughts with us in the comments section of our study. May God bless the study of His Word in your life this week.
Thankfully, the Holy Spirit is always with us to remind us of what the Word says. Also, from this study, it is clear we should be speaking the Word to each other. It would ground us in the Word more than ever, to constantly hear it spoken.
In answering question #3, I thought The Message said it the best. “I’ve written to you, both letters reminders to hold your minds in a state of undistracted attention.” He was trying to get them to remember and focus on what the prophets had said. Again, remembering being so very important.
This is what we are to take from Communion. To bring back to our remembrance, what God has done and still does for us.
You’re so right, Peggy! We all need the Holy Spirit and we also need each other in the Body to remind us of scriptures. And repeating the Word to each other even if we already know it does ground us in the Word. What a ministry we could have in doing that for others. I also love how the Message says it here. We have to be intentional remembering so we’re not distracted by cares or busyness. I love how Communion brings us back to that moment when our salvation was bought and paid for by the death of Jesus Christ. Praise God, It Is Finished! We can’t forget that!
It is to teach us all things – help us to remember everything – all things will be remembered.
HE will always help us to remember – Stir us up in our remembering – We need to help others remember the things of the LORD.
The ministry helps us remember – Just like flash backs of something we have heard before – Words spoken by Ministers whom we have heard long ago =- A scripture we have not heard lately.
Always having the blood applied to our hearts and lives – GOD will always be there to protect us in everything – We will always be safe in the LORD.
Always showing HIS death by taking communion – We feel such closeness to HIM when we do this – Shows our love and relationship with the LORD – Thankful HE gave HIS life for us.
Yes – I have been reminded many times – the person who brings the Word of GOD to his people – GOD has a way of causing us to remember – we must always re-examine ourselves – Wonderful Lesson – Always remembering the word of GOD – the LORD will show each one of us a more excellent way.
I love the verse that says the Holy Spirit was sent to teach us all things and to remind us of everything Jesus has said to us. Your comments about “flash backs” is so true, Odella. We just need to be reminded over and over again. Communion is one way God established for us to remember the death of His Son for our redemption. It seems the Lord knew how prone we are to forget. Thankful for the tools God uses to bring back what we need to know at a specific moment in time.
I am thankful for those in my life that God uses to remind me of His promises. This study has reminded me to be an encourager to family and friends. In 2 Peter 1:12-15 Peter says he intends to remind us of these qualities…”these qualities” are found above in the verses 3-11, which is a GREAT REMINDER for everyday and every situation. I am thankful for God’s Word and the Holy Spirit’s teaching.
How important God’s Word and the Holy Spirit are to us! To encourage others is a great ministry. I love how Peter says he reminds those who are established in the faith. We never outgrow our need for reminders of truth! Thanks for sharing, Anita.
I am very thankful for the Holy Spirit in my life! I do find myself being a person who gets distracted so easily, I do forget things, that’s why I do find my journaling helps me so much! It encourages me when I am reminded of all the Lord has done for me in the past, & increases my faith that He will be there in my present & future! I do feel like I am a person who seems to have a lot of trouble paying attention!
At different times the Holy Spirit will bring to my mind a passage of scripture, or words Ive heard in a sermon, when ministering to someone they will just pop into my mind! I KNOW that is not my own wisdom, but the reminding, or the prompting of the Spirit & I LOVE when that happens! I have learned in this lesson that I do need to share those things that come through the Spirit, I know there have been times He has wanted me to say something to someone, but for whatever reason, one has been feeling that the person I’m talking to is spiritually farther along than me, or feeling like I don’t want to sound like a know it all that I need to move forward with that, that the Lord wants to use me to give a word, in due season when He leads me in that direction & that I can trust Him.
I pray the scriptures Psalms 77: 11 & 12 will be true in my life!
“But then I recall all You have done, O Lord; I remember Your wonderful deeds of long ago.
They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about Your mighty works.
Beautiful scripture in Psalm 77, Teresa. I cannot stop think about your mighty works! Thankful the Holy Spirit helps us remember. I have been there many times, too, not feeling adequate to remind someone more spiritually mature in the Lord or a leader like a pastor. We just might have the word the Holy Spirit has for them at that moment, yet our fears or insecurities hold us back. May we learn to keep in step with the Spirit, to be led of the Spirit and to not lag behind His promptings.
Something I learned in a Gifts of the HS class I took, is that when God gives you a Word of knowledge about someone or a Word that you believe pertains to someone else, we are supposed to first sit on it for a bit and ask God what He wants us to do with it. My first reaction is usually to immediately tell the person whatever it is (because I’m usually so blown away at whatever amazing thing God has just said to me that I want to tell, tell, tell!)….but with maturity comes patience, and the Word is not “always” meant to be shared.
I agree we should make sure the Holy Spirit is leading before we speak into someone’s life. I also believe that to remind someone of a Bible verse brings encouragement. God’s Word never returns void and maybe just a little reminder is just what that person needs. Great insight here, Tara…as usual!
Love the comments…please keep them coming! We learn from each other.
Thank you for our Bible class today. After emphasizing REMEMBER and reading the Passover verses in the OT, my son realized how long people HAVE been remembering. We also learned that the Holy Spirit, our gift, helps us remember. We also realized that remembering the good things of God brings a smile to our face, heart, and spirit!
You bless me once again, Marisol, using these lessons for your Bible class with your children. Love it! And you!
In 2 Peter 12:15 in The Message, it stands out to me that he says he wants to “have all this down in black & white so that after I die, you’ll have it for ready reference.” That’s something I’ve not really thought of before. Yes, I talk to my children all the time about God, but I’ve not really thought about giving them something in black & white for after I’m gone (who wants to think about that, right?). But, I guess that’s a good point! :) In 1 Corinthians 11:24-26, we are told to remember Jesus death by participating in communion. I am sad to say that since moving from Indiana, both churches I have attended and LOVED in Colorado and now Nevada, neither church has ever offered communion to my knowledge! The churches I grew up in always had them like clockwork the 1st Sunday of every month. It’s something I took for granted when I was younger…just a routine thing we did at church. Kinda like vs 26 in The Message: “You must never let familiarity breed contempt.” And now how I miss it! I have absolutely had people remind me of truths in the Bible that I needed to hear. But of course I can’t remember now what they were. Ha! (BTW Karen….last week I sat down to do the lesson and my computer wasn’t cooperating so I wasn’t able to leave comments. Frustrating!)
Powerful words from the Message, Tara. Having it down in black and white to have it for ready reverence…I love that. It’s so true. I know I treasure anything my mom and dad wrote down in their own handwriting now that they’re with the Lord. Talking is good, but writing things down is even better. Another tool for remembering that we can leave for our children.
