Come Up Higher – Lesson 2

Come Up to His Level

We learned in last week’s lesson that God is called the Most High God. This term for God, El Elyon, is defined as, “elevated, lofty, supreme and uppermost.” In other words, the Most High God is Sovereign over all things. Everything is beneath His feet. What a contrast to what we read about the enemy in Isaiah 14, who is “brought down to the depths of the pit, fallen from heaven.” Our Lord is also called the Rock, who is high above us, where He safely sets us in the day of trouble. Today we’ll look at verses that talk about a higher way of living. When facing trials we often allow the situation to put us under, taking us to the pits of despair. We exalt the problem. We get under the pain. But Jesus says, “don’t go there; come up higher.”

Read Habakkuk 3:19

1. Where does the Lord enable us to go?

Read Psalm 18:33

2. Where does He enable us to stand?

Read Psalm 138:2

3. What has God exalted above all things?  How can you use what’s exalted by God to bring you to a higher place?

Read Isaiah 55:8-9

4. What is higher in comparison here? How might this truth encourage you in your present circumstances?

God enables us to go on the heights with the sure-footedness of a deer. His Word and His Name are higher than all other things in life. God is greater and more powerful than our problem. His thoughts and ways are higher than ours. His perspective leads us above the situation. The Lord is drawing us up to His level, to living on higher ground. There are times we might feel it’s too hard to pursue the higher road. Stretching hurts! There is pain in spiritual growth, and it’s often easier to hold on to our former ways. God’s Word says not to go there. Look up! I admit change isn’t easy. But the call is still there: Come up higher! Can you hear it?
