The Power of Life-Giving Words
I am just returning home from my sister’s funeral, wondering what life will look like without her. After an emotional few days, I find my strength in God’s life-giving Word…which is more vital than ever to me right now.
We read in the Amplified Bible: The Lord looked down from heaven to see if there were any who inquired of Him and required Him as VITAL.
You can be sure I am “inquiring” and “requiring” these days…He IS vital to me! But what do I do with these truths? I believe the first step is to meditate on them. I have tasted and seen that the Lord is good! His Word floods my thinking and has become a living reality. I can open my mouth to speak these truths. That’s the foundation on which I stand today.
What comes out of our mouth will become an instrument to defeat the lies the enemy of our souls throws at us. Speaking God’s Word is vital in becoming a spiritual overcomer. Let’s look at some verses that give more enlightenment to this truth.
Read Proverbs 18:21
1. What power is found in the tongue?
Read Matthew 12:34-37
2. How does our heart affect our mouth? What will our words eventually do to us?
Read Ephesians 6:17
3.What piece of spiritual armor is depicted here and what does it represent?
Read Hebrews 4:12
4. How is God’s Word described? What effect does it have on our lives?
Read Revelation 1:16 and 2:16
5. Where is the Sword coming from here? What insight do you gain from this truth?
Do you understand the power of speaking scripture now? Knowing God’s Word is essential because our prayers are speaking back to God what He has already spoken to us. There’s life-giving power in that, my friends. That’s what’s vital!

Death and Life are in the power of the tongue – Our heart speaks through the mouth – By our words we shall be justified or condemned – we must watch what comes out of our mouths all the time – We must take the helmet of salvation and sword of the Spirit – they both represent the word of GOD – which we should have with us at all times – we need to study HIS word more each day – GOD’S word is quick – powerful – sharper than a two edged sword – HIS word pierces us and it is a discerner of all our thoughts and intents of the heart – the sword is coming out of HIS mouth – If we have said or talked about anything that is not pleasing to GOD – we need to repent – or else HE will fight against them with the sword of my mouth – It is so important that you and I study the word and have it in our hearts to be able to speak HIS word at all times – my prayer is to be more and more like HIM each and really to do HIS will at all times – Great lesson for each one of us – Thanks so much Karen – I have enjoyed these lessons so much – I love to study HIS word and have prayers until GOD each day of my life.
I love that you brought out that our words either justify or condemn us so we should watch what we say. The Word is a discerner of our thoughts and intents so is therefore vital to victorious living. It’s pretty powerful that the Word is a Sword in our Lord’s mouth. Lots of application here. Thanks for your input, Odella!
Karen, To those of us who have been given much, much is required. When we are on the mountian top we study and learn, we write, rejoice, and live in joy and peace. Then Satan comes because he hates our fellowship with our Savior. We are tempted to dispair, God allows the test, and then those who put their trust in the Lord and his precious Word, come forth as gold…because we trust in the One who covers us with his Almighty hand of grace. We are like a tree planted by the river of water and we shall not be moved. I am so encouraged by your testimony. I too, am going through a test. I agree with you in prayer. We shall not be moved! We will continue to study, learn, write, rejoice, and choose to live in his joy and peace. We accept his will and cling to his promises. I will continue to pray for you during this time of sadness. I am so sorry for your loss, yet rejoice in Lorraine’s gain! Keep writing His beautiful words. Your sister in Christ Jesus, Paula.
Your wise words bring me encouragement and comfort, Paula. Thank you for reminding me of these truths. In all of this, I have longed to be a woman of grace and stability even when tempted to despair. I can’t imagine my life without my wonderful sister who was like a second mom who loved me unconditionally. I’m so glad you and Lorraine had that history because you understand what a jewel she was. Your writings always bring me to the garden of intimate communion with Jesus Christ. May the Lord be everything you need right now because He is our All in All!
God bless you, and keep writing, my friend! We need you.
What powerful verses from OT to NT to remind us the power of the Word. “Knowing God’s Word is essential because our prayers are speaking back to God what He has already spoken to us.” Well said!
I’m glad you picked up on that truth, Marisol. I want to remember it myself because there is power in our prayers when we agree with God.
I love Matthew 12:34: “It’s your heart, not the dictionary, that gives meaning to your words.” Hebrews 4:12: “Nothing and no one is impervious to God’s Word.” That says it all! Revelation 2:16 “Enough! Don’t give in to them; I’ll be with you soon. I’m fed up and about to cut them to pieces with my sword-sharp words.” I have never read this scripture before. Wow….this one leaves me speechless. :) I have had it drilled into me the power of the spoken word. I’ve tried to teach this to my kids also. My husband, however, is a different story. I cannot tell you how often I will hear him say things like, “it’s going to happen…it’s inevitable.” No it’s not! He’s using human logic & probability. But the power of the spoken word is so powerful! I do understand that just because I claim it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen…but I certainly want to line up the words that come out of my mouth with God’s Word….not the enemy’s or the world’s. Why just lay down and accept “fate?” We have an amazing weapon of our own. So when someone says to me “well, it’s most likely going to happen,” I counter in my mind (or sometimes out loud depending on who I’m with), “I don’t accept that. I don’t claim that one.” And then I say a scripture of what God says about the matter. God’s Word is always my trump card. ;)
Yes, Tara, we can counteract someone’s comment by going back to the truth of scripture. I heard Joyce Meyer say that whenever someone says something negative, or even if she says it herself, she immediately says out loud, “Lord, I negate that thought or comment.” I really don’t think we realize how powerful our words are. So when we agree with truth in scripture by declaring it as truth, we set things into motion. No, it’s not about naming and claiming it, but just declaring the decrees God has already established. Thanks for including how the Message puts it…it leaves me speechless, too, Tara!
Awesome lesson of how powerful the Word of God is to our lives! In every season, everyday we need to be meditating on the Words of God!
Psalm 138:2
I will worship toward Your holy temple, and praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; for You have magnified Your word above all Your name.
Thank you Karen & praying for comfort & peace during this painful time….
Thank you, Teresa. There’s nothing more encouraging than God’s Word. Vital for sure! God bless!
