Faith – Lesson 4

When Faith is Spoken

The call came in the middle of their small group meeting. “Go immediately to the hospital.”

Our son had been sent home on anti-seizure medicine weeks before with two simple instructions. Don’t drive for six months and return to normal routine.  While grateful, something still didn’t seem right.

So many kept praying for answers. One day I walked into a coffee shop and saw an old friend. An avid prayer warrior, she took my hands and began to pray with me for our son. I will never forget her words. May nothing be hidden any longer but may it be uncovered, rising to the top like bubbles in a pot of boiling water. My faith grew stronger as she spoke to the mountain we were facing.

Some friends in the medical field encouraged our son to push for more testing. But even after more scans and MRI’s, there was still no conclusive diagnosis. That is, not until the very last one!  The answer rose to the top like bubbles in a pot of boiling water. It was a shocking diagnosis. Three blood clots in the veins in his head.

Shaken by the call, he spent the entire Easter weekend connected to wires and monitors. The good news was it was manageable with medication. And blood thinners would dissolve the clots within a few months.

But what if this had gone undiagnosed and untreated? What if his physician friends had not encouraged him to push for more tests? What if the root cause had never been discovered?

Thankfully, our family lives by faith. We have witnessed answers to prayer in the past, and we have an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ. Not that we deserve His favor but we depend on the loving mercies of our God. He answered the prayers of many, but I am especially grateful for the boldly spoken prayer of faith made in that crowded restaurant. Our words hold the power of life and death. Let’s use them to speak faith to our mountains.

Read Habakkuk 2:3-4

1. What truths stand out to you in these verses? What does waiting have to do with faith?

Read Mark 11:22-25

2. What actions should accompany our faith?

3. Why do you think it’s important to speak our faith?

4. What is the enemy of faith from this passage?

5. What verses can you speak over your mountains today?

We often talk about our mountains rather than taking to them. Our faith is released when we speak the truths of scripture over our problems. Rather than wallowing in self-pity and empowering the enemy with negative words, try declaring the decrees of the Lord. This is not a magical formula to get what we want. It is an act of trust spoken from a believing heart unhindered by unforgiveness toward others. Lamentations 3:37 says it best, “Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it.” What truths do you know are decreed by God?  Start declaring them in prayer. None of us has perfect faith, but even when we are faithless, He remains faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). What a promise!
