The Skinny Mirror
One glance into the magic mirror was guaranteed to make you look better. Improve your self-image. Give you more confidence.
Introducing The Skinny Mirror.
I saw it on Shark Tank. A promising entrepreneur promoting her invention to five billionaires. The concept: a mirror to make you look better than you really are. Skinnier. More attractive. Reflecting a superior version of the old you.
There’s no doubt some mirrors make you look better than others. Ask any woman! Maybe it’s lighting or quality of construction. But this miraculous invention promised to shed pounds and inches. Eliminating any need for diet and exercise!
The sharks hated it. Calling it deceptive. A gimmick to help stores increase sales. All of them wanted “out.” The inventor exited the tank empty-handed, disgruntled and severely disappointed that no one supported her vision.
Most of us desire to feel better about ourselves. But distorting reality isn’t the answer. Authentic transformation won’t take place by staring into a mirror.
Unless it’s the mirror of God’s Word.
The Bible is the best looking glass that never lies. Reflecting truths to set us free. Not myths to cover up imperfections.
And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we
become more and more like him reflecting his glory
even more. I Corinthians 3:18
God’s Word reveals who we really are. Causing us to look within at our real self. No cover-ups.
Satan works hard to blur the message that comes from God. His purpose is to distort the good news. To prohibit understanding. To prevent people from appropriating truth for salvation.
God’s purpose is to transform us.
Reading the Bible is like looking at a reflection of ourselves in a mirror. We won’t always like what we see. But if we keep looking into the Word, we will be changed. The truths contained in God’s Word make us better people.
If you listen and don’t obey, it’s like looking
at your face in a MIRROR but doing nothing
to improve your appearance. You see yourself,
walk away and forget what you look like. But
if you keep looking steadily into God’s perfect law
that sets you free and if you do what it says and don’t
forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
James 1:23-25
No matter how spiritual we think we are, the Bible will transform us. Our behavior and attitudes improve when we saturate ourselves with scripture. The key is to keep looking into it, acting on what we see.
James encourages us to be consistently dedicated to reading and obeying God’s Word. Joining a Bible study will help you stay tuned to His truths. Becoming more like Him. Reflecting His glory.
God’s Word won’t lie like The Skinny Mirror. But you’ll like what you see. You’ll look like Jesus. And the best part is others will see Him, too. In you!
